The Enduring Power of White Guilt with Shelby Steele

Interview with Shelby Steele

I used to get an annual evaluation that included specific actions on how inclusive I was of some minority group. Any minority group. They really didn’t care what I was involved in, so long as I could prove I was supporting a minority group in some way.

That’s white guilt. I would argue every year that I don’t care what color skin a person has, I don’t care what they’re sexual orientation is, I just want them to their job well.

Anything else is judgement…if I include someone on my team because they’re black or Asian or gay, and not because they do the job well, then I’m essentially saying I don’t think they are capable of doing the job well (because they’re black or Asian or gay or whatever).

“Nobody picks up the matter of race without using it to seek power. It has no other existence at all.” ~Shelby Steele
