Military Flights 9-1

Zephyr – uses sunlight to charge a lithium-sulphur battery during the day, which powers the aircraft at night – designed for use in observation and communications relay.

There have been increased flights the last few days to Gitmo…more planes, bigger planes, call names change mid-flight (including to ANON).

Today’s other flight include:

Boeing E-3 Sentry is an American airborne early warning and control (AEW&C) aircraft developed by Boeing. E-3s are commonly known as AWACS (Airborne Warning and Control System). Derived from the Boeing 707 airliner, it provides all-weather surveillance, command, control, and communications.

Boeing E-6 Mercury (formerly Hermes) is an airborne command post and communications relay The E-6B conveys instructions from the National Command Authority to fleet ballistic missile submarines (see communication with submarines), a mission known as TACAMO (“Take Charge And Move Out”).

Boeing P-8 Poseidon operates in the anti-submarine warfare (ASW), anti-surface warfare (ASUW), and shipping interdiction roles. It is armed with torpedoes, Harpoon anti-ship missiles, and other weapons, can drop and monitor sonobuoys, and can operate in conjunction with other assets, including the Northrop Grumman MQ-4C Triton maritime surveillance unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV).

Boeing RC-135V River Joint is a reconnaissance aircraft designed to support theater and national level intelligence consumers with near real-time on-scene collection, analysis and dissemination capabilities.

Boeing B-52 Stratofortress is an American long-range, subsonic, jet-powered strategic bomber and is capable of carrying up to 70,000 pounds of weapons, and has a typical combat range of more than 8,800 miles without aerial refueling.

Plus lots of others: Pegasus, KC-10 Extenders, DC-10, Stratotankers, fighter jets, etc.

Northrop Grumman RQ-4 Global Hawk is a high-altitude, remotely-piloted, surveillance aircraft. The Global Hawk performs duties similar to that of the Lockheed U-2. The RQ-4 provides a broad overview and systematic surveillance using high-resolution synthetic aperture radar (SAR) and long-range electro-optical/infrared (EO/IR) sensors with long loiter times over target areas. It can survey as much as 40,000 square miles (100,000 km2) of terrain a day, an area the size of South Korea or Iceland.

There seems to be increasingly more military planes every day.

T-38 talons are training jets – we see them frequently – but today – there are maybe 100 across the country – and that’s not normal. May just be training – I don’t know. But I’ve never seen the skies this busy with this much power.
